The questions below serve as a tool for you to choose the right starting level for your child. Please begin at the top and read through each question. As soon as you answer ‘NO’ to a question, you will have found your child’s correct starting level.

• Beginner 1

Can your child go underwater, fully submerged with open eyes and blow bubbles?
Can they repeat this 2 to 3 times, showing bubbles through their mouth and nose?
Can your child kick with a kickboard or holding the instructors hands with their face in the water?

If you answered ‘NO’ to any of the above, your child is a Beginner 1. If you answered ‘YES’ to all of the above, please move to the next section of questions
• Beginner 2

Can your child straight-leg-kick with a kickboard for 12.5 yds?
Can your child get to their back and float on their back unassisted to the count of ten?
Can they get to their tummy and float on their tummy unassisted to the count of ten?
Can your child stream-line kick (no arm stroking) unassisted for at least ten feet?

If you answered ‘NO’ to any of the above, your child is a Beginner 2. If you answered ‘YES’ to all of the above, please move to the next section of questions.
• Intermediate 1

Can your child place their ear on their arm and do side-stroke kicking?
Can your child stream-line kick (no arm stroking) on their stomach and back for 15 feet?
Can your child do the Freestyle/Crawl stroke (no side-breathing) for at least 15 feet?

If you answered ‘NO’ to any of the above, your child is an Intermediate 1. If you answered ‘YES’ to all of the above, please move to the next section of questions.
• Intermediate 2

Can your child do straight leg kicking with a kickboard for 25 yds?
Can your child do the Freestyle stroke (with side breathing) for 12.5 yds?
Can your child do the Backstroke (w/straight arms, head and back still) for 12.5 yds?

If you answered ‘NO’ to any of the above, your child is an Intermediate 2. If you answered ‘YES’ to all of the above, please move to the next section of questions.
• Advanced 1

Can your child do Freestyle for 25 yds with rotation and patterned side breathing?
Can your child do Backstroke for 25 yds, starting with a streamline and breakout?
Can your child do a streamline with Butterfly kick for at least 15 feet?
Can your child do Breaststroke kicking with a kickboard for 15 feet?

If you answered ‘NO’ to any of the above, your child is an Advanced 1. If you answered ‘YES’ to all of the above, please move to the next section of questions.

• Advanced 2

Can your child do Freestyle for 50 yds and attempt a flip turn?
Can your child do Backstroke for 25 yds with a start/dive and count strokes for finish?
Can your child do Butterfly for 25 yds with straight arms and timing of breath and kick?
Can your child do Breaststroke for 25 yds with correct pull/kick/breath timing?

If you answered ‘NO’ to any of the above, your child is an Advanced 2. If you answered ‘YES’ to all of the above, please contact the Swim Team Office for information on when your child can come for an open tryout.
